Each Magento 2.4 release line gets about three years of regular support. When it ends, Adobe stops issuing security patches for that line. Magento 2.4.5 and 2.4.6 reached end of support on 11 August 2026, so stores still on those versions no longer receive Adobe security fixes. Magento 2.4.9, released on 12 May 2026, is the current release. An upgrade also moves you to newer PHP and framework components, which is why it needs planning and not just a quick Composer command.

What is a Magento 2 upgrade?
A Magento 2 upgrade moves your store from one release to a newer one, for example from 2.4.6 to 2.4.9. It usually includes upgrading PHP and other services, updating extensions and fixing custom code and themes that the new version affects.
Which Magento version should I upgrade to?
The current release is Magento 2.4.9, released on 12 May 2026 for both Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce. We recommend the right target after checking your extensions, PHP and hosting. In some cases we move in stages, through an intermediate version.
Is my Magento version still supported?

What is the difference between an upgrade and a security patch?
A security patch fixes specific flaws inside the version you run. An upgrade moves you to a newer release. Patches keep a supported version safe, while an upgrade is needed when your version is about to lose or has lost support. See our Magento security patch installation.
Will my extensions and theme still work after the upgrade?
Some will, and some will need updates, replacements or fixes. We check every extension and your theme on a staging copy, and fix what breaks before anything reaches your live store.
Do I need to upgrade PHP as well?
Usually yes. New Magento releases raise PHP and service requirements, and Magento 2.4.9 supports PHP 8.5 and no longer supports PHP 8.2. We plan the PHP upgrade together with Magento, and check the exact requirements for your target release.
How long does a Magento 2 upgrade take, and what does it cost?
It depends on how far behind your version is, how many extensions you run, how much custom code you have and which systems connect to your store. You receive a clear scope, timeline and quote after the assessment.
Will my store go offline during the upgrade?
Only briefly. We rehearse the whole upgrade on a staging copy, so the live cutover is short. We choose a quiet trading window, put your store in maintenance mode for the switch, and keep a rollback plan ready.
I am still on Magento 1. Can you upgrade it?
Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020, and there is no upgrade path to Magento 2. It needs a migration, where your data is moved to a new Magento 2 store. See our Magento 2 migration services.
